Why you Need a Natural Deodorant
Hear from our clean cutie expert, MC, on the benefits of using natural deodorant 🌱🧖♀️
Let's talk pits, shall we?
Natural deodorant has been in the forefront when people start switching to natural products, and there are many reasons as to why one would choose to switch to natural.
Our natural bodily function to sweat can sometimes be seen as unfavourable by society and it’s unusual standards, but at the end of the day it is a necessary body function. The skin is our largest organ and for it to stay healthy, it has to sweat!
This is where the concept of antiperspirants started to cause some debate as they are essentially blocking the sweat glands, thus eliminating a natural bodily function.
Dr. Mariza Snyder is quoted saying "Our skin is the biggest organ in our body, and it's part of a detox pathway. If you're not sweating, it's a sign you're not burning off toxins, or that you have a sluggish metabolism.”
So why should we be striving to stop it? The answer is we shouldn’t be.
There has been a lot of fear-mongering as well around deodorants and antiperspirants being toxic, harmful, and even carcinogenic. The main ingredient people are fearful in non-natural deodorants/antiperspirant is aluminium.
The beauty of all natural deodorants
There has been a lot of reports around deodorants and antiperspirants being toxic, harmful, and even carcinogenic. The main ingredient people are fearful in non-natural deodorants/antiperspirant is aluminium.
In addition, there are ingredients or chemicals in non-natural deodorants that are often the cause of irritations which can be avoided by making the switch to natural.
A chemical such as propylene glycol, which on paper is classed as a low risk of irritation, is still an unnecessary chemical on your body, and the chances of someone reacting to it are much higher than if you are using natural ingredients such as coconut oil.
The beauty of natural deodorants is that the ingredients are simple, and you probably have them at home already which helps in knowing you can trust them on your body.
Natural deodorants usually consist of 3 main ingredients, but can be customised to preference and needs:
- Something to absorb sweat, but not block it (ex. baking soda)
- A natural antibacterial/binding agent (ex. coconut oil)
- Natural fragrance (ex. essential oil)
Another great reason to switch is the lower impact natural deodorants have on the environment.
These ingredients do not need intense manufacturing or could have adverse effects in the environment if released as a gas during process.
These are more ethically sourced ingredients which will lead to a lower carbon footprint. More often than not, you will be able to find more environmentally friendly packaging with natural deodorants as well. Every little step counts!
With the rise in interest in natural products, also came the rise in brands making natural products which means that there is a great array of options when choosing the natural deodorant of your dreams. You can have stick, roll on, sprays, creams, etc.
It is important to note that, like any product, it is not a one size fits all but there are so many options out which makes finding yours a lot easier than a few years ago when options were few and far between.
Personally I have tried out so many various types of natural deodorants, and most recently I have been using the Agent Nateur Deodorant, and it has probably jumped to my favourite one out there so far!
