Nearly a year ago I set out to Austin, Texas to check out the natural beauty brands at IBE. One brand in particular that stuck out to me was Skinveda – ‘where science and nature are in harmony’.
Skinveda is an ayurvedic all-natural beauty line founded by scientist, Shilpi Jain. Shilpi utilizes the 5,000-year-old practice of Ayurveda along with her extensive knowledge in science and natural beauty ingredients to create her nutrient rich products. I took some home myself that day and was very impressed with the quality.
That is why I was really excited to talk with her on Clean Chat. As someone that was well versed in skincare, it was nice to understand the “why” behind the brand and her products. She shares with us some secrets about Ayurveda as well as how to find out your “V” or Vikriti – a way to know your mind body balance and what skincare products would be best to soothe those imbalances. Shilpi also shares great information for new natural beauty founders that are looking to grow. Definitely check out their page at www.skinveda.com or their Instagram @skinvedaskincare.
Now onto the show!
Raquel: Hello everyone and welcome to Clean Chat. Today we have the awesome founder of Skinveda, Shilpi Jain. I met Shilpi last year at IB Dallas and I was immediately struck by her passion for clean beauty and her products. She’s been in various publications and stocked in the Clean Beauty Mart in Beverly Hills as well as truth and aging online which we’ll talk about a little bit later. Without further ado, Shilpi do you mind telling us about Skinveda and why you started your line?
Shilpi: Sure Raquel, thank you for having me. I started Skinveda in 2006, my son was about a year old. He had developed some acute eczema and having worked for over a decade as a research development scientist I didn’t want to put anything intrusive on his skin. With mineral oil and petrol oil being the leading names that were highly recommended. I decided not to use those so I went to the lab, I created a serum for him that was free of those chemicals and then within a week I noticed amazing results on his skin. To this day he’s 13 years old and has not seen eczema, he’s been using that serum, it’s called the replenishing serum and I did not look back. But I continued to work as a scientist until 2011 in corporate research development and I decided to quit and start my own skincare line in the comfort of my own laundry room, it all started there. It was a personal need that prompted me to create a line that showed results without using any harsh chemicals and embraced the philosophy of less is more.
Raquel: Right so I started as a need from your son and you decided you know what you wanted to expand and start your own line based one what your beliefs are, to kind of try the clean beauty industry. So Shulpi I’ve been on your website and I’ve taken your quiz and it asks, what is you V? Could you tell our listeners a little bit about what that means?
Shilpi: Definitely Raquel. V is Vikriti, it is the current state of balance between your mind and body. so the quiz is a way to find out what is your current imbalances that are leading to skin issues, be is rosacea, be it dark circles, be it just dry skin dehydrated skin. So there is a huge correlation between your skin and your mind body imbalances and that is what we’re trying to calculate. We’re using the science of psycho dermatology. How your mind body imbalances impact effect your skin type. And that’s why V is really Vikriti or your current mind body imbalances. There are three distinct skin types or mind body profiles according to the science of Ayurveda and these are Vata, Pitta or Kapha. So you could be one of the combination of 2 or 3 and then once you know your it directly tells you what is the right customized skin care for your skin type.
Raquel: Could you tell us a little bit more about the 3 different types like what type of personality type would have a certain type of V.
Shilpi: So like I said there’s 3 different distinct dosha’s, I mean just for layman’s terms, Vata is more associated with air, the science of air the wind. And these are the people who have kind of dry skin, very dehydrated skin. They have poor circulation so they’ll notice their hands are cold all the time, their feet are cold, they just want to wear socks even if it’s a hundred degrees temperature.
Raquel: That’s me (laughter)
Shilpi: Yes and I’m kind of there too and these people are always on the go they’re kind of nervous and they tend to have insomnia and insomnia leads to skin problems like dark circles and their skin looks dehydrated and they’re more prone to aging, meaning wrinkle formation because their skin is kind of thin. So that’s just a Vata dosha or the sign of air.
The second is Pitta dosha, which is a sign of fire. So you can imagine fire, it’s hot and Pitta dosha people tend to get aggravated a lot. So they are very focused people but when something goes off balance you will notice signs of anger, their skin gets heated up. They also have a good metabolism but when they’re out of balance their skin shows signs of oily skin. They’re prone to acne and sunburns. So that’s just their dosha and according to Ayurveda whatever you are you do the opposite of that meaning if your a Pitta dosha you need to counter balance that with something cooling. Say coconut, imagine cooling yourself internally and externally.
And last but not least is Kapha dosha which is associated with Earth. So these are people who are more grounded, they’re stable. They think very carefully but when they are out of balance their skin shows congestion. So they tend to take in a lot and tend to bottle up stress. I can give you nice examples of the 3 types but it just helps. Kapha dosha people tend to show congested skin, large pores and they need to detoxify, they need something lighter. they need to flush our those toxins, that’s how their dosha is.
Those are the 3 different skin types or doshas and you can be a combination of 2 or 3 or Vata Kapha.
Raquel:: I see that was going to be my next question. Sometimes I can be fire, sometimes I can be earth so sometimes you can be both.
Shilpi: That’s right and that’s exactly what Vikriti means, your current day balances or imbalances due to daily life because in Ayurveda your dosha is affected by the physical environment that you live in by weather, the people you interact with. Everything affects you so it can never be constant it continuously changes. We try to keep in contestant but it’s really hard. Using the right skin care on daily basis, listening to your body, listening to your mind. Sleeping at the right time, we just forget to listen to our mind, body cues and that’s where disease happens. We can listen to that, we can really have a balanced lifestyle. Easier said than done.
Raquel: Yeah I know. That’s a good point you bring up, skincare and the products that you use is just one side of beauty. it’s also what you eat, it’s how you sleep, it’s the water you drink, everything it’s all cohesive. Speaking of that can you tell us what your most popular Skinveda skincare product is and why?
Shilpi: Well I’m kind of biased to the replenishing serum because this was the first product that I made for my son and I have seen an incredible difference in a lot of people starting with my son. Aesthetician have been using this product and they say that after a facial when people flare up or have sensitivity to certain things or it could be post threading you know that redness that happens, it immediately diffuses the redness . So I feel like this a multi-tasker to me. Some people say the serums helps elevate the skin, it brightens it. It helps with the circulation which is a very important thing, Vata dosha or people with very sensitive skin because it has no fragrance so I really like that and it also gives a skin lift, you know it almost makes your skin feel tight and that is because of the sesame seeds that are present and oat peptides. So it’s like one product that you can just put in your bag and it can do a lot of things for you.
Raquel: That sounds great, and so you mentioned some really interesting ingredients. What are your favourite ingredients to use and why?
Shilpi: Yes when I chose ingredients I do a lot of research and being a chemist I like to look at their chemistry and the synergy. Something for redness, roscacea like symptoms so one of the things that came to mind are aveenatrides or oatpeptides. According the american academy of paediatrics, oats are the number one antihistamine that are naturally found and they’re used in diaper rash creams as well. So that why when we were leading to natural ingredients that was the number one ingredients that I chose. I also wanted to make sure that these were gluten free because my son is gluten free so these are gluten free oats and they work really incredibly well when you combine them with certain ingredients.
The second ingredient that I chose copper glucanaide and zinc glucanaide and manganese espardate. These are 3 synergistic tissue salts that are body lacks and in the right about they help increase circulation. They activate the energy of your skin.
I wanted to do all those, I wanted a nice micro delivery system using a potato starch gel and infuse all these ingredients like the oat peptides, the tissue salts and then I had green tea which is an anti-oxidant, aloe Vera which is very soothing. I also have sesame seed extract and sesame seed oil. Sesame seed itself is very energizing and it also has the ability to build collagen and gives your skin that instant lift that I was talking about. Those are the main ingredients present in the replenishing serum that work really well in combating redness and sensitivity.
Raquel: And helping to clear rosacea and any sensitivity, that sounds great.
Shilpi: Yes, yes I use it all the time. I use it all the time I feel like it’s something that is amazing.
Raquel: That’s awesome. So you must of had this knowledge before because you were a scientist or this something you had to figure out on your own researching all the ingredients?
Shilpi: As a chemist you still have to research because there are so many ingredients out there but I did know about oats. I had been reading about it, as a mother I had been using it so I knew the beauty of oats as an antihistamine but how you infuse that, that’s something you research. As a chemist you always research, even if you know the chemistry of compounds you still have to research. Especially Ayurveda ingredients, it’s not just getting good ayuvedics herbs and make something, you know it can have a negative effect so you need to know how ayruvedic herbs work together and as a chemist it really helped me put all that together.
Raquel: Sounds like your very well trained on the subject. This is exactly why I would never try and make a product (laughter)
Shilpi: (laughter) I’m still learning I try.
Raquel: You’re doing great. Could you tell us a little bit about the importance of having a comprehensive system for your beauty products. Do you have a beauty tip you would like to give to our listeners?
Shilpi: A beauty tip, yes. You know one of my biggest beauty tips is to sleep at least 7 hours which I guess we all forget. It’s simple to say that but sleep deprivation we all know can cause a lot of chronic diseases but on the skin it plays a havoc. I mean we already see the physical aspects of not having good sleep with puffy eyes, dark circles, be it our skin looks almost dead, we don’t look radiant, dehydrated. it can also reduce collagen formation and it also leads to inflammation, inflammation is bad for you in any form. Inflammation can cause cellulite, inflammation can cause..
Raquel: That’s enough I will be sleeping, no more cellulite (laughter)
Shilpi: Trust me that’s my number one tip. Other than that I would highly recommend that people wash their face daily even before sleeping and take off their makeup. It’s such a small thing but such a huge impact it plays on the skin. Having clean skin and sleeping, you reduce and bacterial formation, you clean those pores and you can really have better skin, especially if you wear a lot of makeup I think that’s really important to unclog those pores in the night-time. We all remember to clean our face in the day time but at night time we get lazy about it but I think it’s such a huge step towards having good skin.
Raquel: yeah I agree and it will help you sleep better as well having everything taken off your face. That’s a good tip, thank you. How long has Skinveda been around, when did you first found your company?
Shilpi: In 2011when I quit my job I started thinking about Skinveda and building the line and I was also doing consulting on the side, that helped leverage my skin care line. Officially I launched Skinveda in 2013 in Whole Foods and since then I haven’t looked back.
Raquel: Right you worked with Whole Foods . And is there anything you would like to give to people who are starting a clean beauty product line, what do you wish you would have known starting back then?
Shilpi: A lot of things (laughter).
Raquel: You kind of have to make mistakes right?
Shilpi: Yes, yes oh my goodness. If only I could start all over again. But I don’t regret it, I think all those failures and mistakes make you what you are and you learn from them but my advise to people starting out , to always read between the lines and make decisions not emotionally. Don’t easily trust people because everybody is not the same and we try to get emotional about things, trust people and that’s one of the things I did and I had some failures and setbacks. Meeting people who didn’t really care about what I was all about and I’d give but I didn’t get back. So listen carefully, read between the lines, get everything in writing, very important that we don’t just go through the word of mouth of what somebody promises you, get everything in writing. And be patience because patience is such a huge step. Everybody has the same agenda like you, they’ll take their own time. You might have a certain date to launch, it’s just very important to be patient and if somebody is not working with your timelines it’s time to move on. So that’s my take from my mistakes. I was a little impatient and I did trust people easily and had some setbacks but I moved on, I didn’t look back and stop. I could have but I didn’t.
Raquel: No that’s good and you’re going great. Actually that leads to my next question, I know you’re in a couple new stockists now, can you tell us a little bit about them?
Shilpi: Yes I’m very excited, recently I think a couple of weeks ago we were stocked at the Clean Beauty Mart which is in Beverly Hills. They have our complete line at their location as well as on their online portal. So that’s exciting. The second exciting news is Truth and Aging which is also an online retailer. They have a very nice system where they have a candid reviews, it can be good and bad and they put everything on their portal and then let the customers decide what they want. Of course they really make sure their ingredients are free of harsh chemicals so that’s why I really like those two beauty retailers, to work with them because they are all about clean beauty.
Raquel: Right and it’s so important to have a good retailer to work with, can you tell us why you like those retailers in general to work with?
Shilpi: In general one of the things that I like Truth and Aging is it’s a woman based retailer and they really work hard towards researching. they put down everything, what the ingredients are about and what are the pros and cons. It’s honest, it’s an honest review and that’s what resonated with me is that honesty. then Clean Beauty Mart was anther retailer that I really liked the fact that they’re really selective in their process. They don’t just take on any brand right away. so they do their research and they’re really in to vegan and cruelty free so we really connected on that level. to be able to find in Beverly Hills was also a huge step so I’m excited.
Raquel: No, I’m excited as well. Can you tell us what are the next steps for Skinveda, where do you see yourselves in the next couple of years?
Shilpi: Sure well I’m going to keep moving up, we’re trying to get Skinveda into more prestige locations, retailers. Hopefully continue that progress and process and maybe add more products next year but for now we’re pretty good with what we have because we just launched 3 new products last year at the Indy Beauty Expo. We will continue to do that and try to even reach global within ‘Europe and other parts of the world and just continue taking those mini steps and take Skinveda to the platform amongst people who are into clean beauty.
Raquel: Awesome. Okay where can people get a hold of you and your products.
Shilpi: They can definitely get a hold through our website Skinveda.com and they can fill out the contact form and we will respond within 24 hours. We also have a LinkedIn page, twitter page, Instagram page. They can also look at all the different locations that Skinveda is carried in and also sign up for the newsletter which gives them access the new products and specials and any other information we would like to share with our audience.
Raquel: Right and don’t forget to take their V test.
Shilpi: Yes it takes less than 60 seconds and your done.
Raquel: Oh really okay. Thank you Shilpi for coming on the show today it’s been a pleasure. Check out their website, take the test, check out their Instagram and we’re going to be following your and we look forward to watching your success and thank you listeners and hope you have a great day.
Shilpi: Thank you so much for having me today Raquel, I’ve really enjoyed talking to you.
Raquel: You too, bye.
